A2 level Information Communication Technology - Unit 4

Data

Data Capture

Data can arrive in the computer in many different ways. The most common are:

  • keyboard
  • bar code reader (at the supermarket)
  • swipe cards
  • smart cards
  • character recognition
  • EDI (electronic data interchange)

GIGO - Garbage In, Garbage Out.

If the data collected is rubbish then the information produced by processing of that data will be rubbish!

Electronic data capture is more reliable than keying data via a keyboard. The types of error that can occur using the latter are:

  • Transpositional errors (where 4002 is keyed instead of 2004)
  • Transcription errors (where the data is copied wrongly)
  • Verification (data is entered twice by different operators and compared to find any errors)
  • Validation (checks to ensure valid data is entered)
