A2 level Information Communication Technology - Unit 4

Success or Failure of a Management Information System

Overview

A successful system will be one that

  • Does what was expected
  • Has a high level of use
  • High level of user satisfaction
  • Used as intended

So why do so many systems fail?

Look back at the Development and lifecycle of a system section because if any of the stages are not adequately covered then odds are the system will fail.

The above famous picture should give you an idea of what can go wrong with design!

People

"The user must be involved at some point!" - This often used mis-quote is rather a truism but shows that if the user is not involved at all stages of the system development it will fail.

If management does not give it's full backing to a project it will fail.

If the project itself is not managed properly it will fail.

If risks to the system are not considered and planned for the project will fail
