A2 level Information Communication Technology - Unit 5

Policy & Strategy

The need for an information technology policy.

Most medium and large organisations need an IT policy to set out their future plans for the development of their information needs.  Such a policy will cover

  • Existing hardware and software
  • Future hardware and software requirements
  • Procedures for users
  • Security
  • Legal requirements

Without such a policy an organisation could find itself with all the problems associated with incompatible operating systems, hardware and software, and users with too much, or too little “end user computing”.

The strategic implications of software, hardware and configuration choices for an organisation.

Provision of information can help an organisation gain its competitive edge.  Through the use of a clear policy users can see how the existing information systems provide at the moment and the planning for the future.

The range of needs of different users.

Users at the strategic, tactical and operational levels will have differing needs and these needs must be catered for.

  • Management Information Systems (used by senior management – strategic level)
  • Knowledge Work Systems (used by middle management and professionals – tactical level)
  • Transaction Processing Systems (used by clerical workers, sales people and customers – operational level)
